30 November 2012, at the meeting room of the Department of Planing, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, there was a discussion among Ministry of Science and Technology (Dept of Standard and Metrology), Ministry of Industry and Commerce (Dept of Foreign Trade Policy), Minitry of Agriculture and Forestry (Dept of Planing), and LUNA Lao.
The meeting discussed the lessons learned from last Vietnam study visit on 11-17 Nov 2012 and also discussed the implementation of SPS and TBT transparency requirements of Lao PDR which aimed to be fully operational upon the WTO full membership of Lao PDR in early next year. The meeting recognized certain contraints to be urgently addressed which include: the understanding and support from each management level in each sector, the insufficiency of personel, the need to build capacity for responsible staff, in particular, the understanding of SPS and TBT agreements, and other necessary factors.
The meeting also discussed how to organize a management level meeting on the overall SPS and TBT works relevant to the obligations under WTO accession of Lao PDR.
During the discussion, LUNA Lao also promissed to provide necessary financial support for relevant disseminiaiton activities and necessary publication.
